JOANNA DUDA TRIO AT JARASUM FESTIVAL is a non-commercial artistic project created and brought to life by the Planet Foundation (project leader, Poland), co-financed by Poland’s Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund and supported by the Polish Embassy in Seoul. It is carried out in cooperation with the Jarasum Jazz Festival (strategic partner, Republic of Korea) and the NPLUG Inc (partner, Republic of Korea).

The project brings a world-renowned Polish jazz artist Joanna Duda to one of the most prestigious cultural events in South Korea – the Jarasum Jazz Festival, the largest jazz fans gathering in the country and one of the biggest in the world as well. Representing Polish culture and contributing to promoting Polish cultural heritage, in the course of the project Joanna Duda Trio will play a contextual concert for the Korean audience – with a program prepared especially for the occasion.

The project’s goal is to strengthen the image of Poland abroad as one of the world’s leading forces in jazz music. It continues and further develops a long-standing cooperation between the Planet Foundation and the Jarasum Jazz Festival. In earlier years, the two jointly implemented seven Polish-Korean artistic projects in Korea – resulting in more than a dozen performances by top Polish jazz acts in Korea, a number of leading Korean jazz acts concerts in Poland, and creation of some premiere Polish-Korean music works through international workshops.

요안나 두다 트리오 at 제22회 자라섬재즈페스티벌은 플래닛 재단(폴란드, 프로젝트 리더)이 기획하고 실현한 비영리 예술 프로젝트로, 폴란드 문화유산부 문화진흥기금의 공동 지원과 주한 폴란드 대사관의 협력을 통해 진행됩니다. 이 프로젝트는 자라섬재즈페스티벌(전략적 파트너, 대한민국) 및 NPLUG Inc(파트너, 대한민국)와의 협력으로 진행됩니다.

이 프로젝트는 세계적으로 유명한 폴란드 재즈 아티스트 요안나 두다를 한국에서 가장 권위 있는 문화 행사 중 하나인 자라섬 재즈 페스티벌에 초청합니다. 자라섬 재즈 페스티벌은 국내 최대 규모의 재즈 팬 모임이자 세계적으로도 손꼽히는 재즈 페스티벌입니다. 폴란드 문화를 대표하고 폴란드 문화유산 홍보에 기여하는 차원에서, 요안나 두다 트리오는 한국 관객을 위해 특별히 마련된 프로그램으로 컨텍스트 콘서트를 선보일 예정입니다.

본 프로젝트는 폴란드를 세계 재즈 음악계의 선도적 국가로 해외에 알리는 것을 목표로 합니다. 플래닛 재단과 자라섬 재즈 페스티벌 간의 오랜 협력 관계를 지속하고 발전시키는 계기가 될 것입니다. 지난 몇 년간 양측은 한국에서 7건의 폴란드-한국 예술 프로젝트를 공동으로 진행해 왔습니다. 이를 통해 폴란드 최고의 재즈 아티스트들의 한국 내 10여 차례 공연, 한국을 대표하는 재즈 아티스트들의 폴란드 내 다수 공연이 이루어졌으며, 국제 워크숍을 통해 몇몇 초연 폴란드-한국 합작 음악 작품이 탄생했습니다.

Joanna Duda is arguably Poland’s most compelling and versatile contemporary female jazz musician. She composes, improvises, performs and produces, using both acoustic and electronic instruments (from grand piano through synthesizers, beatmachines and computers to abstract items). She is interested in the sonic potential of seemingly useless objects, like dilapidated instruments she often uses to generate unexpected sounds, skillfully weaved into her music. As if it wasn’t enough, Duda’s boundless creativity also led her to video-art, where like in her music she often uses pre-prepared samples from various sources to create unusual one-of-a-kind collages.

Joanna Duda first put her name on the map in 2010, releasing a debut album with her AuAuA Trio. Subsequent years saw her joining the ranks of Poland’s leading avant-garde jazz force, Wojciech Mazolewski Quintet, and teaming-up in the J=J project with another local great, Jan Emil Młynarski. In 2013 Joanna Duda released a debut LP under her own name – titled „The Best Of…” and featuring an all-star ensemble of guests and embracing the lo-fi aesthetic. This eclectic and multi-layered album oscillated from classical interpretations of Maurice Ravel’s works, through a flashy vivisection of Frédéric Chopin’s Polonaise in A major, Op. 40, No. 1, to some jazz-pop electronic miniatures.

In 2014, together with pianists Bartłomiej Wąsik, Emilia Sitarz, and Michał Kozłowski, Duda recorded „Gay Guerilla” and “Evil Nigger” – original works by a leading representative of the American post-minimalist movement, Julius Eastman. Meanwhile, 2015 and 2016 brought new releases by the Mazolewski Quintet and the J=J with Joanna Duda’s participation.

In 2019, Duda’s second album under her own name – „KEEN” – was released. On her sophomore LP, she used snippets of instrumental sounds, field recordings, barely recognizable vocal samples, noise, and broken rhythms, turning them into a very eclectic whole. This constant shifting of moods and styles is one of Duda’s signature artistic methods, but as the critics reviewing the album pointed out – „in all this chaos she manages to maintain a remarkable unity of sound”.

The latest of Joanna Duda’s projects is her Trio, combining modern electronics with the traditional jazzband sound. The ensemble debuted in 2018 in Germany at the Jazzahead! festival in Bremen. The other founding members were Max Mucha (double bass) and Michał Bryndal (drums) – although apart from the leader, the lineup somewhat fluctuated over time.

In 2021, Joanna Duda Trio’s debut album „Fumitsuke” was released – garnering enthusiastic reviews and cementing the group leader’s position on the jazz-alternative firmament. „Let’s say this out loud […] The latest album by the Joanna Duda Trio is sensational! […] (They have) increased the sum of artistic goodness in the Universe”. This quote, from a review in Poland’s influential Jazz Forum magazine, clearly demonstrates the impression „Fumitsuke” made.

On July 2, 2025, the first single heralding a sophomore album by Joanna Duda Trio was published. Titled “Delighted”, the new release premiered on October 10, 2025.

Over the years Joanna Duda also wrote music for numerous theatre productions, like “Station des Corps” (directed by T. Bazan), “Balladyna” and “Herb Brecht” (by K. Garbaczewski), “2” and „Nomadka” (by K. Pastuszak) as well as “Fetish.WTF” (by D. Androsz). She was sought out to compose the music for the first Polish Netflix Originals Movie (“Erotica” 2022) too, again demonstrating her uncanny ability to blend subtle complexity with melodic piano hooks.

Joanna Duda received multiple Cultural Scholarships of the City of Gdańsk, as well as a scholarship from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. She has frequently been nominated for prestigious Polish awards (like the Guarantees of Culture by Poland’s public broadcaster TVP Kultura, or the Galiony Gdyńskie handed out yearly by the mayor of Gdynia). She is also a program council member of Gdynia’s Halo Kultura Association, serving as its curator of artistic events.

With all her projects – Joanna Duda has continuously and successfully performed around the world – from Sisimiut in Greenland, through Tokyo, Berlin, Budapest, London, Dublin, Oslo, Paris, London, Dublin, Budapest, Prague, Brussels, Kaliningrad, Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore, to Delhi, Bangalore, and beyond.

요안나 두다는 폴란드에서 가장 매력적이고 다재다능한 현대 여성 재즈 뮤지션으로 꼽힌다. 그녀는 작곡, 즉흥 연주, 공연, 음악 프로듀싱을 아우르며 그랜드 피아노부터 신디사이저, 비트머신, 컴퓨터, 추상적인 물건에 이르기까지 아날로그와 전자 악기를 모두 활용한다. 낡아빠진 악기처럼 쓸모없어 보이는 사물의 음향적 잠재력에 관심을 두며, 종종 이를 통해 예상치 못한 소리를 만들어내 능숙하게 자신의 음악에 녹여낸다. 이뿐만 아니라 두다의 무한한 창의력은 비디오 아트 분야로도 이어져, 음악에서와 마찬가지로 다양한 출처의 사전 제작된 샘플을 활용해 독특하고 유일무이한 콜라주를 창조해낸다.

2014년, 피아니스트 바르톨로메이 바시크, 에밀리아 시타르즈, 미하우 코즐로프스키와 함께 두다는 미국 포스트 미니멀리즘 운동의 주요 대표자 율리우스 이스트만의 원작인 “Gay Guerilla”와 “Evil Nigger”를 녹음했다. 한편, 2015년과 2016년에는 마졸레프스키 퀸텟과 조안나 두다가 참여한 J=J의 새 음반이 발매되었다.

2019년에는 두다의 두 번째 솔로 앨범인 “KEEN”이 발매되었습니다. 이 두 번째 LP에서 그녀는 악기 소리 조각, 현장 녹음, 간신히 알아볼 수 있는 보컬 샘플, 노이즈, 깨진 리듬을 사용해 매우 절충적인 전체를 만들어냈다. 이러한 끊임없는 분위기와 스타일의 변화는 두다의 대표적인 예술적 방법 중 하나이지만, 앨범을 리뷰한 비평가들이 지적했듯이 „이 모든 혼돈 속에서 그녀는 놀라운 사운드의 통일성을 유지한다”.

요안나 두다의 최신 프로젝트는 현대적 일렉트로닉과 전통 재즈밴드 사운드를 결합한 트리오이다. 이 앙상블은 2018년 독일 브레멘에서 열린 재즈헤드! 페스티벌에서 데뷔했다. 창립 멤버로는 맥스 무차(콘트라베이스)와 미하우 브린달(드럼)이 함께했으며, 리더를 제외하고는 시간이 지남에 따라 라인업이 다소 변동되었다.

2021년, 조안나 두다 트리오의 데뷔 앨범 „Fumitsuke”가 발매되어 열렬한 호평을 받았으며, 그룹 리더의 재즈-얼터너티브 음악계에서의 위상을 확고히 했다. „일단 이렇게 말하자면 […] 조안나 두다 트리오의 최신 앨범은 정말 놀랍다! […] 조안나 두다 트리오는 우주의 예술적 가치 총량을 높였다”. 폴란드의 영향력 있는 잡지 <재즈 포럼>의 이 평론 인용문은 „Fumitsuke”가 남긴 인상을 명확히 보여준다.

2025년 7월 2일, 요안나 두다 트리오의 두 번째 정규 앨범을 예고하는 첫 싱글이 발매되었다. „Delighted”라는 제목의 새 LP는 2025년 10월 10일에 초연되었습니다.

조안나 두다는 수년간 수많은 연극 작품의 음악도 작곡했다. 여기에는 T. 바잔의 „Station Des Corps”, K. 가르바체프스키의 „Balladyna”와 „Herb Brecht”, K. 파스투자크의 „2”와 „Nomadka”, D. 안드로시의 „Fetish.WTF” 등이 있다. 그녀는 폴란드 최초의 넷플릭스 오리지널 영화 „Erotica” (2022)의 음악 작곡을 의뢰받기도 했는데, 이는 섬세한 복잡성과 멜로디컬한 피아노 후크를 결합하는 그녀의 탁월한 능력을 다시 한번 입증했다.

요안나 두다는 커리어 내내 전 세계에서 꾸준히 성공적인 공연을 펼쳐왔다. 시시미우트(그린란드), 도쿄, 베를린, 부다페스트, 런던, 더블린, 오슬로, 파리, 런던, 더블린, 부다페스트, 프라하, 브뤼셀, 칼리닌그라드, 베이징, 상하이, 싱가포르, 델리, 방갈로르… 이 모든 곳은 요안나 두다가 자신의 음악을 연주하기 위해 방문한 장소들 중 일부에 불과하다.

Jarasum Jazz Festival (formerly: Jarasum International Jazz Festival) is a world-class large-scale Korean jazz event, held annually since 2004 on the picturesque island of Jaraseom in the town of Gapyeong-gun, near Seoul. From its first edition, this event always gathered a record-breaking number of performers (starting with 30 artists from 12 countries, and expanding ever since) and audiences (it attracts about 100,000 spectators annually, and as many as 95% of them are regulars; single edition attendance record is around 170,000 people). Year by year, jazz fans from Korea and numerous other countries, together with the world-famous artists who perform, create a unique atmosphere at this fantastic event, which usually goes on for three or four days.

Jarasum Jazz Festival was hailed as an “Outstanding Festival” by Korea Republic’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism – and has been named “Best Festival in Korea”. The festival is also closely related to environmental protection, and its honorary ambassador is Green Life. Admission to the Festival is free for people over 65 and for children up to the age of 8, which means that the audience is very diverse in age and there is a truly unique, family-friendly atmosphere. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest jazz events in the world, at the forefront of such in Asia and one of the most important cultural events overall taking place in the Republic of Korea.

자라섬재즈페스티벌 (구 자라섬 국제 재즈 페스티벌)은 2004년부터 매년 서울 근교 가평군 자라섬에서 열리는 세계적 수준의 대형 한국 재즈 행사입니다. 첫 행사부터 이 축제는 항상 기록적인 수의 공연자(12개국 30명의 아티스트로 시작하여 그 이후로 계속 확대됨)와 관객(매년 약 10만 명의 관객을 끌어모으며, 그 중 95%가 단골 관객임; 단일 행사 최다 관객 기록은 약 17만 명임)을 모았습니다. 매년 한국을 비롯한 여러 나라의 재즈 팬들과 세계적으로 유명한 아티스트들이 함께하며, 보통 3~4일간 진행되는 이 환상적인 행사에서 독특한 분위기를 만들어 냅니다.

자라섬재즈페스티벌은 한국 문화체육관광부로부터 '우수 축제’로 선정되었으며, '국내 최고의 축제’로도 꼽힌 바 있습니다. 또한 환경 보호와도 깊은 연관이 있으며, 그린 라이프가 명예 대사로 활동하고 있습니다. 65세 이상 노인 및 만 8세 이하 어린이에게는 무료 입장이 허용되어 관객 연령대가 매우 다양하며, 진정한 의미의 가족 친화적 분위기가 조성됩니다. 이 축제는 아시아를 선도하는 세계 최대 규모의 재즈 행사 중 하나이자 대한민국에서 열리는 가장 중요한 문화 행사 중 하나로 손꼽힙니다.

Planet Foundation, launched by Sylwia Kowalska in December 2012, is a non-profit based in Warsaw, Poland. Its main statutory objectives are local and global actions aimed at global promotion of local culture, arts and craftsmanship – as well as encouraging healthy lifestyle, respect for human rights and developing civil society. Since 2012 Planet Foundation and its leader created and successfully implemented more than 50 large international projects, with total budgets exceeding 250.000 EUR – spanning from Poland, through Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia and Belgium, to Turkey, India, Republic of Korea and Japan.
